A NEIGHBORLY PRE-CHRISTMAS CLEAN-UP RAISES AWARENESS OF ILLEGAL DUMPING

About 200 Scientology Volunteer Ministers gathered in front of the MLK Community Center before 1 Dec Cleanup

If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER.”
— L. Ron Hubbard
CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, US, December 13, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On the morning of Saturday, December 1st, some 200 Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VMs) flooded the Clearwater neighborhood of Greenwood in their sea of yellow shirts for a pre-Christmas clean-up. The headquarters of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers of Florida in downtown Clearwater is less than a ¼ mile from Greenwood, a neighborhood plagued with illegal dumping.

“We have to put an end to the illegal dumping of trash in this neighborhood,” said the Florida VMs Executive Director, Glendy Goodsell. “It starts with clean-ups like this to increase awareness and responsibility.” Ms. Goodsell also noted that the trashier the neighborhood, the more likely crime will increase as per the Broken Window Theory by Professors Kelling and Wilson.

After a safety briefing on handling trash and hazardous materials, the volunteers grabbed their gloves, bags and hit the streets. Within 3 hours, the VMs had filled 60 trash bags and gathered: 12 tires, 21 TVs, 9 couches, 3 mattresses, 3 dressers, 2 desks, and a night stand. In all, the trash collected filled nearly two 30-yard dumpsters.

“I want to wholeheartedly thank the Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers for continuing to take care of the community,” said Greenwood leader, Mr. O’Neal Larkin.

Residents are encouraged to contact the City of Clearwater which has a section on its cell phone app for reporting illegal dumping.

ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER MINISTERS: The Volunteer Minister (VM) program was launched more than thirty years ago, in response to an appeal by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. Noting a tremendous downturn in the level of ethics and morality in society, Mr. Hubbard wrote, “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER.” Accordingly, Volunteer Ministers work within communities, helping to improve conditions right at home. Renowned for their disaster relief, Volunteer Ministers have trained and partnered with over 1,000 different groups, organizations and agencies around the world, including the Red Cross, National Guard, Army Cadets, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts and disaster management agencies.
