Wheeler confirmation hearing begins

Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler is expected to face questions about renewable fuels and environmental regulations from U.S. Senators during his confirmation hearing today.

Wheeler took over as EPA chief after Scott Pruitt resigned in July amidst criticism for issuing RFS compliance waivers to oil refiners.

Senators who support ethanol will likely drill Wheeler on upholding the Renewable Fuel Standard and issuing quick implementation of year-round E15.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing will probably address issues like clean water and climate change as well.  Under President Trump’s directive, EPA is actively working to rescind the WOTUS rule and develop a Clean Water Rule that minimizes the jurisdiction of the federal government.

Senate Democrats could use the hearing as a platform to raise concerns about the President’s environmental agenda.

Committee chair John Barrasso, a Republican from Wyoming, supports Wheeler, saying he’s done an outstanding job leading EPA and is well-qualified to run the agency on a permanent basis.
