JACKSON, Miss. (WTVA) — Mississippi fourth grade students led the nation in score improvements in reading and math since 2013.

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) announced the good news on Wednesday morning, Jan. 29.

The data comes from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress, which measures student performance in fourth and eighth grade reading and math across the country, including Washington, D.C. It's administered every two years.

Mississippi students improved from 2013 to 2024 as the national average decreased.

The improvement in fourth grade scores is remarkable.

Reading and math scores ranked No. 49 and No. 50 respectively in 2013. Reading improved to No. 21 in 2022 and math improved to No. 33. Reading improved to No. 9 in 2024 and math improved to No. 16.

Eighth grade scores improved slightly during the same period.
