Nordex turbines to power 336-MW wind farm trio in S Africa
Mar 26, 2024 10:08 CESTSouth Africa is seeking to award 20-year contracts for the construction of renewable energy projects across 19 locations in the country, including government irrigation facilities.
The project will be selected through a competitive procurement on a design-build-finance-operate (DBFO) basis. An expression of interest for independent power producers (IPPs) was released by the Department of Water and Sanitation earlier in March.
The eligible technologies are hydropower, floating and ground-mounted solar photovoltaics and wind power. The capacity can be either standalone or grid-connected.
The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is April 18.
The government will be the primary energy off-taker, while it will be the IPPs’ task to secure secondary off-takers for any surplus power. The installed power generation capacity is expected to be in operation for 20 years.
South Africa has set a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Under its National Development Plan, the nation aims to deploy 20 GW of new renewable power generation capacity by 2030, with around 6.9 GW of the total planned to be installed by independent power producers.
