Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier's defense turned it up in the second half Monday at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The seventh-ranked Rebels forced Kidder County into 10 turnovers and allowed just three points in the third quarter, as E-K-M defeated the Wolves 49-38 in the quarterfinals of the Region 3 girls basketball tournament.

The Rebels will now get a rubber match with fourth-ranked Carrington in today's semifinals at 6 p.m. E-K-M won the regular season meeting 48-43, but lost to the Cardinals by 17 in the semifinals of last week's District 5 tournament.

"We had to come out and play better defense," said E-K-M's second team all-state junior forward Katie Entzi on Monday's performance. "We had too many turnovers in the first half so we had to come out and work harder in the second half."

Taylor Mathern scored E-K-M's first basket of the third quarter from beyond the arc off a pass from Maren Berntson. The trey sparked a five-minute, 8-0 run.

"We made a few adjustments," said E-K-M coach Rory Entzi. "Starting at the end of the first half we did a few things differently on offense. We just seemed to be very stagnate and so those little adjustments seemed to help out."

The Rebels controlled the boards as they grabbed 31 rebounds-12 offensively, capitalizing on 12 second-chance points compared to just two by the Wolves.

Entzi recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Mathern was right behind her with 10 points. Overall seven Rebels scored in the victory.

For the Wolves, Madelyn Schmidt connected on a trio of 3-pointers and had 13 of her game-high 16 points at halftime. Kidder County senior standout Grace Benz finished scoring 11 in the loss.

"They have some really good players," Rory Entzi said. "Grace Benz is good-we tried a lot of different things with her to keep her out of sync and that's almost impossible to do.

"Madelyn Schmidt shot well in the first half," he added. "That's something we talked about was we can't allow her to keep shooting."

Now E-K-M will turn its attention to a balanced shooting Carrington team that won a third-straight District 5 championship and got past Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter 65-41 during Monday's quarterfinals.

"Carrington is really good," Rory Entzi said. "They are well balanced and they play seven or eight girls. The first time we played them it was a battle and the second time they beat us. We have to bring it to make it game."
